Volumetric Weight Calculator for Courier & Parcel Shipping

Use the Sona Packers & Movers volumetric weight calculator to calculate the dimensional weight of one or multiple parcels. Enter the package dimensions, number of boxes and actual weight to determine volumetric weight and chargeable weight for courier, parcel, cargo and logistics shipments.

CM / Inch / Feet Multiple Boxes 4500 Divisor Actual vs Volumetric Chargeable Weight

What Is a Volumetric Weight Calculator?

A volumetric weight calculator is a shipping tool used to estimate the weight of a parcel based on the physical space it occupies. Courier and logistics companies may use dimensional weight when a package is large in size but relatively light in actual weight.

This Sona Packers & Movers calculator converts the dimensions of each parcel into centimetres, calculates its volumetric weight using the applicable 4500 divisor, compares that value with the actual weight, and provides an item-wise chargeable weight along with the shipment total.

The calculator supports multiple boxes in the same shipment. This is useful when a parcel contains several cartons with different sizes or when a courier consignment contains multiple packages.

📦 For Courier & Parcel Shipments

Useful for domestic courier, parcel, cargo and logistics shipments where package dimensions can affect the chargeable shipping weight.

⚡ Important

The calculated result is a weight estimate for planning and comparison. The final chargeable weight may depend on the courier's own measurement and applicable service rules.

📏
Dimension Based Length, width and height are used to determine dimensional weight.
💰
4500 Divisor The calculator uses the 4500 volumetric divisor specified in this tool.
🚚
Multiple Packages Add different boxes when a shipment contains packages of different sizes.
⚖
Chargeable Weight Actual and volumetric weight are compared for each item.

Shipment Weight Summary

Total Volumetric Weight 0.00 KG
Total Actual Weight 0.00 KG
Total Chargeable Weight 0.00 KG
Chargeable Weight is calculated separately for each item. The higher of Volumetric Weight or Actual Weight is selected for each item. The final Chargeable Weight is the sum of all item-wise chargeable weights.

Why Do Courier Companies Use Volumetric Weight?

Shipping space is an important part of transportation. Two parcels can have the same actual weight but occupy completely different amounts of space inside a delivery vehicle, cargo compartment or logistics facility.

For example, a large lightweight carton containing pillows, plastic products or other low-density goods may weigh only a few kilograms while occupying substantial vehicle space. A small dense carton containing metal parts may weigh considerably more while occupying much less space.

Volumetric or dimensional weight provides a way to account for the physical space occupied by a shipment. Depending on the courier or logistics service, the chargeable weight can therefore be determined by comparing the actual weight with the calculated dimensional weight.

Important: The exact divisor and charging rules can vary between courier services, shipment categories and contracts. This calculator specifically uses a 4500 divisor, as configured in this tool.

What Is the Volumetric Weight Formula?

After the dimensions are converted to centimetres, the calculator applies the following formula:

Volumetric Weight = L × W × H ÷ 4500 Length, Width and Height are measured in centimetres.

Example of Volumetric Weight Calculation

Example: 50 × 40 × 30 CM

Volume = 50 × 40 × 30 = 60,000 cubic centimetres. Dividing 60,000 by 4,500 gives approximately 13.33 KG volumetric weight for one box.

Compare With Actual Weight

If the same box has an actual weight of 8 KG, the calculated volumetric weight is higher. The resulting chargeable weight for that box would therefore be based on the higher value.

What Happens When a Shipment Has Multiple Boxes?

Multiple packages should not always be treated as one large box. Each box can have its own dimensions and actual weight. This calculator therefore allows you to add multiple items separately.

For every item, the calculator calculates the volumetric weight, total volumetric weight, actual weight and item chargeable weight. The final shipment summary then combines the individual results.

Why Are Length, Width and Height Important?

Even a small change in package dimensions can significantly affect the calculated dimensional weight because all three measurements are multiplied together.

  • Length: the longest dimension of the package.
  • Width: the second horizontal dimension.
  • Height: the vertical dimension.
  • Actual Weight: the physical weight of the box.
  • Number of Boxes: how many identical packages use those dimensions and weight.

CM, Inch or Feet: Which Measurement Unit Should You Use?

The calculator accepts dimensions in centimetres, inches and feet. Select the same unit that you used when measuring the package. The calculator converts the entered dimensions into centimetres before applying its configured volumetric-weight calculation.

Measurement tip: Measure the outer dimensions of the packed parcel rather than only the dimensions of the product inside. Packaging material can add to the final parcel dimensions.

Actual Weight vs Volumetric Weight

Actual weight represents what the parcel weighs on a weighing machine. Volumetric weight represents the estimated shipping weight based on the physical dimensions of the parcel.

When volumetric weight is higher than actual weight, the parcel occupies more transportation space relative to its physical mass. When actual weight is higher, the shipment is physically heavier than its dimensional calculation.

When Should You Use a Volumetric Weight Calculator?

This tool can be useful before booking a courier or parcel shipment, especially when the package is large, lightweight, irregularly packed, or when a shipment contains several cartons.

Volumetric Weight Calculator FAQs

Common questions about dimensional weight, chargeable weight and parcel measurements.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, is a calculated shipping weight based on the physical dimensions of a package. It helps account for the amount of transportation space occupied by a parcel.

What formula does this calculator use?

This calculator converts dimensions to centimetres and uses Length × Width × Height ÷ 4500 to calculate volumetric weight.

Why is the divisor 4500 used?

The divisor determines how package volume is converted into a volumetric shipping weight. This particular calculator is configured with a 4500 divisor. Courier-specific rules can use different divisors, so the final courier calculation should always be confirmed with the applicable service.

Can I calculate multiple boxes together?

Yes. Use the Add Another Item button to enter different packages. Each item can have its own number of boxes, dimensions and actual weight.

Can I enter dimensions in inches or feet?

Yes. Select Inch or Feet before entering the dimensions. The calculator converts those measurements into centimetres before performing the configured calculation.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight used as the basis for shipment charging under the applicable calculation method. In this calculator, the actual and volumetric weights are compared for each item and the higher value becomes the item's chargeable weight.

Why should I measure the packed parcel?

Shipping charges can depend on the final package size. Therefore, measuring the packed outer dimensions gives a more useful estimate than measuring only the product before packaging.

Is the calculated weight the final courier billing weight?

Not necessarily. This tool provides a calculation based on the information entered and its configured 4500 divisor. A courier may re-measure the parcel and apply its own service rules, minimum billing weight, rounding policy or other applicable charges.

Does packaging material affect volumetric weight?

Yes. If packaging increases the external length, width or height, it can increase the calculated volumetric weight. For a useful estimate, enter the dimensions after the parcel has been properly packed.

Can this calculator be used for courier and parcel shipments?

Yes. It is designed as a dimensional-weight planning tool for courier, parcel, cargo and logistics shipments where volumetric weight may be relevant. The applicable courier's final charging rules should be confirmed before booking.
